Jodo Shinshu Center, Berkeley, California

Hayashida Architects worked with the Berkeley Landmark Commission, the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association, and with the Japanese community locally and from abroad, to convert a historic Art Deco building, originally a car dealership owned by the same owner of the famous racehorse Seabiscuit, into the headquarter of the Buddhist Church of America. In 2006, Berkeley Design Advocate recognized the Jodo Shinshu Center Building with its serene Japanese aesthetic as an outstanding addition to the built environment in Berkeley.
