Red Tractor CaféSan Jose, California
The Red Tractor Café’s idea was based on the founder’s memories of his grandmother’s farm in the Midwest. Using natural colors and finished woods (pine and Douglas fir), Hayashida Architects recreated the image of Sunday dinners at the farm house. The farm image is emphasized by having the Red Tractor logo stenciled on all table tops. A special dining area was created by leaving the wood studs exposed and sealed, and using wood blocking as shelving for jars filled with “canned” fruits and vegetables, reinforcing the farmhouse image. These images reinforce the “comfort” food that is served daily. With the location set in a strip center, the opportunity for signage and graphics are minimal, so to emphasize the presence, a red tractor “sign” was set in a field of wild flowers, in front of the restaurant entrance.
